Alt Country is a subgenre, a niche, an artistic mongrel for those bands and fans who heard an unmistakable truth in early country that they took into their post punk/ indie rock lives. The style and grit of icons like Hank Williams Sr. and Johnny Cash got lost in modern country radio and was reignited late at night in beer bars full of alternative music lovers craving melody and stories. Alt country is a continuum of artists, influenced by the past, striving to create something new and lasting.

This playlist attempts to scratch the surface on the past, present, and future of the genre including current hits by Mumford & sons and Old Crow Medicine Show, classic influencers like Cash, Gram, Neil and Townes, and songs that would be smash hits in a just pop culture landscape by Wilco, drive by truckers, fleet foxes and bright eyes among many others.
