Mr. P.C.
John Coltrane

Label: Atlantic
Released: 1959

We at Rhino realize that jazz is not the genre of choice for many DFD regulars, but the aim of Damn Fine Day is to expose you to music we think is great, even if that means leaving your comfort zone.  This track from Coltrane’s classic 1959 Atlantic Records debut Giant Steps, produced by the legendary Nesuhi Ertegun, features one of the greatest quartets ever: John Coltrane (tenor saxophone), Paul Chambers (bass, and the person for whom the song is named), Tommy Flanagan (piano), and Art Taylor (drums).  There are only a handful of jazz albums that have crossed-over into mainstream notoriety and success; Giant Steps is one of them and it’s an album that belongs in every music lover’s collection.

Rhino been berry berry good to me with jazz reissues. That is to say my house has lions, etc. Have it. Love it.

  2. Stephen (the poet) Says:

The greats are always welcome. Every side step from the norm’s of everyday life is a gift, an exercise into distraction, which may lead to inspiration. So with the music of jazz. Improvisation at it’s finest. The name says it all. Coltrane.

    thumbs up!

  4. Pastor Tim Says:

Just listened to this album (yes, on vinyl) two weeks ago so it’s a delight to see DFD pick this one for Monday. I only wish I had more thumbs so I could give it more than two because this is a brilliant, innovative jazz quartet at its very best. Thank you!!!

  5. jageroc Says:

Stephen (the poet) said it very well!

  6. Iowa AL Says:

Great, just what I needed on this Monday. I used to own this on vinyl, but somewhere along the line it disappeared. Thanks DFD, no genre should be off-limits. An old friend always told me “there’s no such thing as a bad beer, but some are definitely better than others,” and that is certainly true for music genres. Cheers.

    Respect Mister Coltrane !!!

In his book about Woodstock, Michael Lang wrote about seeing John Coltrane in Brooklyn when Mike was 16 years old. He drew a correlation between John Coltrane’s jamming and working without a net just as Jimi Hendrix performed at Woodstock, (especially during Jimi’s rendition of The Star Spangled Banner).
This type of risk taking and strolling out onto new uncharted plateau’s in music are just not done today.
Thanks DFD, John Coltrane is always an enjoyable journey, and today’s excursion was delightful!!

  9. Book'em Danno Says:

Just the kind of pick-me-up I needed for a rainy Monday. Fantastic Coltrane… there IS NOTHING more to say!!!! Thanks!

  10. David Says:

Ahhh! Rhino treats us to Trane. You fellas at DFD are always welcome to send more jazz our way, especially of this caliber. For those who want to know more about Coltrane, I suggest reading Ben Ratliff’s “Coltrane: The Story of a Sound”. The most insightful book you’ll ever read about the man.

Nice to see some Jazz on this format. Most people have never given Jazz a serious listen and
they don’t know what they’re missin’.There is more then a handfull out there. Miles Davis,
Brubeck, Kenton, Bassie, Ellington just to mention
a few…Coltrane is real Kool. Thanks DFD..

  12. Gibby Says:

Where did you get the impression, Mr. DFD, that we DFD regulars do not like jazz? I think you’ve done a great job of spanning most every other genre (except for contemporary country, but that’s fine by me), so why not classic jazz? If I had to choose one song to listen to for the rest of my life, it would be ‘Trane’s version of “Lush Life” with Johnny Hartman

Speaking of country — have you ever featured anything by Asleep At The Wheel? A little western swing would be cool!

  13. Gibby Says:

Whoops — brain cramp — you just featured Bob Wills a few weeks back, right? I guess that’s enough western swing for the moment…

  14. stinky Says:

I love Coltrane and I love this album. 500 points and an all-expense-paid weekend for two on the tropical island of his choice for David Dorn!

Plus a new washer and dryer from Whirlpool!

And a lifetime supply of Tide “Color-Safe” Detergent!

Great choice, Mr. Dorn! Go tell your boss that I said to give you a raise.

  15. janielaurel Says:

not much more I can add to this. Classic Coltrane on a Blue Monday. Yowzah…. this was spectacular, and JC at his best. Once more you’ve brought us something classy, important, stunning in its content. Thanks, DFDD

  16. janielaurel Says:

sorry about the stutter, DFD….. pesky typos have been with me all day. LOL

  17. mike Says:

I see that we are back to analvision as a pass time
Lala is NOT available to those of NON american residence
    NOW WHAT?????

  18. Rael Says:

Not a Jazzer, but recognize greatness when I hear it. As Lucinda Williams sings in “Righteously” (a song that couldn’t be more far removed from this one), “Be my lover, don’t play no game… Just play me John Coltrane”. Oh yeah.

  19. michael Says:

    Dear Rhino,

Please feel free to take us out of our comfort zone any damn time you like.

    Sincerely,
    music lovers

  20. Charles Says:

    more jazz please!

  21. Grumblegrumblegrumble Says:

Hm. Didn’t realize “Giant Steps,” one of the best loved and most famous jazz albums of all time, involved leaving one’s “comfort zone.” C’mon. What’s next, “Round Midnight”?

  22. david peters Says:

    Real nice, thanks.

  23. kpipe Says:

Great music transcends boundaries and catagories.
This is simply one of the best Damn Fine songs played ever in the DFD series.
Thanks, especially for stretching it out for 7 minutes. Excellent choice.

  24. Richard White Says:

I wish that fr8trayn heard this. This is soooo kooooool. I have heard this track so many times. This is what jazz is all about. Thanks DFD for the best as always.

  25. Armond Says:

I’m not a big Jazz fan, but I do appreciate GOOD stuff. John Coltrane is I guess about the best. Thanks for the good stuff.

  26. Maque Says:

    And for Stinky….don’t forget , ” a baby’s arm, holding an apple”

  27. Maque Says:

Maybe you can find some Jimmy Smith…………

  28. Ron C. Says:

No need to apoligize, DFD, for giving us the variety we’ve been asking for…
Keep up the good work, and send us more, more, more !!!

  29. GregB Says:

Comfort Zone? This is like putting me in a feather bed. Keep it coming DFD! Giant Steps is always welcome to these ears.

  30. Mark Z Says:

I tried to give this a listen, but it’s just not for me.

  31. stinky Says:

Note to Maque: I wish I’d thought of that - but it’s not too late to include it! Consider it done.

Note to Mark Z: Give it another chance. Go out tomorrow and buy it; you can get it just about anywhere. When you get home, set aside some personal, private time and listen with open ears. Make sure that you have some herbal enhancement nearby. Take it from the ‘voice of experience’; jazz and herbal enhancement is just like dying and going to heaven. Trust me on this.
