Back in the mid-1940s, Bob Wills, the King of Western Swing, and his incomparable band of city slickers, the Texas Playboys, stood at their creative apex, and were searching for new worlds to conquer. Packing their unprecedented musical gumbo of country, pop, blues, jazz, mariachi and Dixieland into their saddle bags, they rode into Oakland, California’s Tiffany Music Corporation and recorded 150 transcriptions intended to be marketed as syndicated radio programs to stations across the Southwest. The shows never sold, but they left an inspired legacy of some of the hardest-swinging Texas tunes this side of ZZ Top. “Fat Boy Rag” roared to life as the band jammed in the studio on May 20, 1946. Powered by a choogling jump-blues rhythm, barrelhouse piano runs, white-hot fiddling and Lester “Junior” Barnard’s ferocious, near-manic guitar picking (”Ugly! Yeah!,” Wills exclaims in the background), “Fat Boy Rag,” even 60 years after it was recorded, could make a deacon turn to drinking.

I love Bob Wills! That happy sound never gets old!! It reminds me of the same sound as Tex Wiliams (Smoke-Smoke-Smoke that cigarette), or Hank Williams (Honky Tonkin’).

These guys left a legacy for many to follow–Asleep at the Wheel and Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen–to name just two. This is good sh…well you know.

I think my favorite parts are Bob’s interjections and exclamations…makes it sound like we’re boppin’ with the band at some beer-soaked roadhouse gig.

I knew the name but had not heard a lot of Bob Willis’ music. This stuff really swings. I can see the Commander Cody referrence. If your toes aren’t tappin’ you must be dead!

I can still remember seeing him in an old Gene Autry movie and have been hooked ever since. From San Antonio Rose on. Ya gotta love the Texas Swing of The King of Texas Swing. Thanks Rhino and Bob.

Iowa Al has it right. I (like many) went from Asleep at the Wheel and Commander Cody BACK to Bob Wills and the Playboys. Ain’t regretted it yet.

Never had the pleasure of hearing these guys before but it rocks even if it isn’t R ‘n R! The guitar picking is fantastic. Thanks DFD for another interesting nugget that has whetted my appetite for more. DFD is the college of musical knowledge (if I may borrow that phrase from Kay Kaiser) & continues to enlighten us on the good & bad of all kinds of music. Keep it coming.

Привет вам,друзья мои. Сегодня всем нам продемонстрировали эмблему грядущей в 2014 году Олимпиады, и я конечно не могу себе отказать в удовольствии нафлудить тут у Вас…
А может не так уж он и плох? 
Итак, буквально по всем каналам промчалось данное известие, как подобает, с наивысшей степенью ПиаРа. Сам президент показал нам логотипчик, замутили пресс-конференцию, на Первом забабахали концерт, ну и конечно, рекламные ролики о нашей необыкновенной Олимпиаде.
Тем самым как то на 2-й план отошла сама картинка, что будет красоваться на флагах, шарфиках, и прочей сувенирной продукции через 4 года. А хотелось бы остановиться на ней поподробнее. Откровенно говоря, когда увидел, был немного разочарован. Сложилось такое ощущение: сидят значит наши организаторы Олимпиады, и тут один вскакивает с дивана и кричит “мужыки, нам ведь завтра эмблему в Олимпийский коммитет надо отсылать”. Начинается паника, но не долго думая наши функционеры садятся за ближайший компьютер, набирают незамысловатым шрифтом фразу Sochi2014 (конечно же по английски) добавляют банальное .RU А чтобы не заморачиваться с графикой, в поисковике находят олимпийские кольца и впихивают их рядом с этой надписью в фотошопе
Ребят, просто нет слов! Всё могу понять: кольца, название города, год проведения, но где тут фишка??? та, чтобы цепляла. Где нестандартные дизайнерские решения? Взять к примеру лого той же прошедшей Олимпиады 2006 года в Турине, где изображен силуэт “Моле-Антонеллины”, который нельзя перепутать ни с чем. Он плавно переходит в изображение горы, окруженной кристалликами льда, на которой снег сливается с небом. Кристаллики переплетаются между собой, образовывая сеть: сеть новых технологий и вечного Олимпийского единства.
Я вот совсем не понимаю, зачем нам нужно это .RU Посещаемость сайта решили повысить? так я думаю он и без эмблемы имел бы посетителей. К тому же официальный сайт олимпиады будет на английском и явно не в зоне RU. Да и вообще на фоне продвижения государством доменной зоны RF, как то уже начинаешь привыкать к мысли что зона RU вскоре станет “устаревшей” чтоли, а то и вообще сгинет как пережиток прошлого..
ЗЫ То ли ещё будет, весной талисман нужно миру показывать..
