Like A Tattoo
Sade

Label: Epic
Released: 1992

Today’s song is recommended by Queensryche’s Geoff Tate, whose aggressive hard rock/heavy metal seems like a world away from Sade’s detached, jazzy R&B-pop. “Like A Tattoo” comes from Sade’s highly successful 1992 album, Love Deluxe, which spawned the hits “No Ordinary Love” and “Kiss Of Life.” The chilled-out vibe of the song is in contrast to the story the lyrics tell. Sade talks of a lover whose past is burdening and shaming him, and of the conflict and potential violence that haunt him. Geoff’s roles as lead singer and lyricist in Queensryche allow him to weave stories, like Sade does, within his songs. His progressive approach to metal sets the band apart from their contemporaries not only by the topics they tackle but by the ambitious concept albums they’ve produced.

Couldn’t focus on the lyrics so it was a relaxing way to kick off the week. Hey Rhino, Sade’s “Spirit” would be a great one for your digital singles series. It was the excellent B-side of the “Smooth Operator” single, and as far as I know, it’s not available on CD. Maybe on iTunes, but I can’t connect & verify right now.

I adore this song. Thanks, DFD!

God Bless Helen Folasade Adu. Rumour is there’s new material coming later this year, which will be the first fresh music she’s released in 9 years. Talk about a dream career - to be that loved, respected and successful that you can record once in a decade, tour, then go back to your manse in Ocho Rios and quietly enjoy the fruits of your success.

fabulous performer and songwriter. Talk about a perfect way to settle into a Monday afternoon, after a very hectic morning. thanks, DFD. This one really made my day and will go into my Lala credits account.

I was visiting Tucson in February of 1985 when, flipping through tv channels, I happened upon MTV and her video for “Smooth Operator”. I’d never seen or heard her before (or heard of her) and was struck, immediately, with how ‘different’ she was from everything else that preceded and followed that video.

I bought her debut cassette (!) and loved it, but never - for some reason - followed up on her career.

Glad to know she’s still around!

    Nice choice! Thanks!

This is what makes DFD so great…a beautiful tune (that many of us have never heard before) recommended by a musician from a completely and radically different genre. I totally agree with Robbie about including this on the Rhino B-side series. Excellent way to cruise into the week. Thanks Mr. Tate (and Damn Fine Day).

Robbie/Rael - Sade is on Epic. Rhino does WEA.

BTW - everyone saying “I didn’t know Sade was still around.” This album is from 1992! She’s actually got a new one coming soon, though!

Very smooth. Ideal chill out music I’m not sure whether people actually listen to the lyrics though-but hey, SADE is always welcome.

I fell in love the first time I heard “Smooth Operator”. I haven’t listened to Sade in quite a while, but just fell in love all over again. I’ll definitely have to get the new album. Thanks DFD and Geoff for bringing me back to a great love affair.
