Do Anything You Want To Do
Thin Lizzy

Label: Warner Bros.
Released: 1979

Harrumphing open with kettledrum pomp atop Phil Lynott’s street-thug bass, “Do Anything You Want To Do” is vintage Lizzy at a time when the band’s vitality was all but sapped. Part of its appeal is, of course, the twin Irish lead guitars, here essayed by interim flogger and longtime Lynott pal Gary Moore (dig his sustain toward the end). “Do Anything” led what would prove to be the last consistently great Thin Lizzy joint, Black Rose: A Rock Legend, chock fulla rockers like “Toughest Street In Town,” “Waiting For An Alibi,” “Róisín Dubh (Black Rose),” and Lynott’s chillingly autobiographical “Got To Give It Up.” Sadly, the band would seldom sound this alive again.

Now you’re gonna make me dust off my record player and dig out my LPs! Not the best Thin Lizzy LP but still I’ll listen to these guys over any current emo crap anyday!!

  2. Mac Says:

    Nice one, Cory!!

Like I’ve always (always?) said, “if ya don’t like the Lizz, there’s the door.”

  3. Dr. Winston O' Boogie Says:

Simply the most underrated band of the classic rock era…
and sadly, we miss you Philo :-(

These guys have been gone so long that many people don’t realize just how good they really were. Thanks for digging this one out!

  5. Scott Says:

One of the most underrated bands in history. Great track.

  6. Philip Says:

Except that one of those “twin Irish lead guitars” was actually from Glendale, California. Good track, though. And a great band. - R.I.P. Philo!

  7. Dave Says:

This is a great Lizzy LP. Gary Moore added a new punch. The songs always revolve around Phil’s bassline though. Truly should be considered one of the legends of rock n roll.

Small tale: saw them in a gym in Illinois or Iowa (can’t even remember that far back) and they rocked the place!
Blew out the place and his bass strings glowed! He picked me out of my weed high and got me rockin’. God bless his soul!

  9. Robbie Wise Says:

Thank you . Gary Moore is on fire!

  10. Michael Patterson Says:

Hmmm. I keep saying i’m going to get some Lizzy. I always dug “The Boys…” no matter what anyone says. This cut reminds me of that. What the eitch? It’s just good ol’ guitar-oriented rock ‘n’ roll. This might not meet some people’s definition of a classic but it makes me feel good just listening. And, that’s what rock ‘n’ roll is about, right?

  11. Vesan Says:

I hate to think that band is really only known for one song - they have countless other gems - this is an awesome album (save for maybe 2 of the tracks) - but great pick here! One of my faves

  12. Lee Says:

Great choice from sadly an almost forgotten band.

  13. Brian Says:

Man, what a great band! Even their weaker songs are still good. By the way, Scott Gorham, one of the twin leads, is American. And “Live and Dangerous” is a great album. Also, I can’t help but wonder if Adam Ant ever heard this song before? Thanks Cory.

I echo all the above comments by my fellow Lizzieites, is funny how a band with SO MANY great songs really never got their due, but we true believers will never, ever, doubt that Philo & lads are true rock legends - I still think Brian Downey’s drum work on “Chinatown” is what rock drumming was all about - RIP Phil, I sure miss ya…….

  15. Johnny The Fox Says:

…..and don’t anybody forget - how cool were the double leads !!

  16. Armond Says:

I’ve been a fan for a long time. Saw them in Europe in the 70’s they blew away BTO. It’s good to hear them again.

  23. Daver In Chicago Says:

I’ve always thought that melodic hard rock was among the hardest types of music to play, simply because it’s so easy to get it wrong. Thin Lizzy is a perfect example of getting it right. The sound of Phil’s voice alone makes me want to turn this up. Then you throw in the driving rhythm, the tasteful twin leads and the catchy chorus and my volume control can’t go high enough. Thin Lizzy was, undoubtedly, one of the greatest rock bands of all time.

  24. Brian Says:

Man, you’ve got that right Daver.
